UX research to Apple's e-commerce website

I conducted UX research to dig into why people make certain buying choices and to pinpoint where things might be getting tricky for them. After that, I came up with a plan to show how we could make things smoother and better.

The Design Process

In this case study, we dive into the design process, research methods, and design concepts employed to enhance Apple's eCommerce customer experience. With the overarching goal of increasing conversion rates and website engagement, our journey explores key insights and recommendations from analysis and user-centric design principles.

Project Overview

BUSINESS PROBLEM

Although Apple's eCommerce website enjoys high traffic and plays a crucial role in attracting and retaining customers, it faces significant challenges in conversion rate and user retention. The company has identified these as critical issues impacting its online sales performance. Feedback from customers and internal analyses suggest various potential reasons, including navigational difficulties, the complexity of the purchasing process, or perhaps a lack of engaging content to encourage repeat visits.

OBJECTIVES

  • Identify factors impacting iPhone sales and customer retention.

  • Optimize Apple Online Store for improved performance and business alignment.

Data Collecting

During my usability evaluation of the iPhone product page on the Apple website, I analysed a total of 33 usability best practices, with a specific focus on 17 relevant ones. These practices were assessed to determine their effectiveness, areas for improvement, or critical issues based on the current design of the iPhone product page.

I have utilized the following usability attributes to address the identified problems and enhance the overall user experience.

Good

The main product photo is visually appealing but not functional, as users must scroll for a closer look. A 360-degree animation at the top could enhance engagement, with the product gallery further down for easy access.

Room to improve

There is no specific place where a user can access all photos related to the product. A good item to be thought of on top of the navigation bar of the product page is a product gallery

Bad

The product gallery does not show thumbnails, arrows, and supports swipe actions, which are great to be implemented if a product gallery is created.

Problem Definition

I have categorised insights from my task analysis and usability expert review into three groups to address specific issues effectively.

1

Navigation and Interaction Challenges

Insight: Users may encounter difficulties in finding specific iPhone models using the search field and navigating to comparison of product pages due to unclear categorisation or buried links.
Recommendation: Enhance the clarity of navigation by reorganising category labels and ensuring prominent placement of links to iPhone product pages on the homepage.

2

Product Presentation and Details

Insight: Users may face challenges in accessing detailed information about iPhone models, such as specifications, features, and pricing, leading to decision-making delays.
Recommendation: Improve the presentation of product details by optimizing layout and visibility of key information, including specifications, comparison tools, and pricing options.

3

Checkout and Purchase Process

Insight: Users may encounter friction points during the checkout process, including complex forms, unclear instructions, and slow loading times, leading to abandoned carts.
Recommendation: Optimize the checkout experience by streamlining form fields, providing clear instructions, and optimizing page load times to minimize user frustration and increase conversion rates.

Wireframing Solutions

Based on gathered insights, I've begun creating wireframes for potential solutions for our case.

Setting Task Success Rate

North Star Metric

The North Star Metric for our design implementation plan is the User Task Success Rate. This metric is pivotal as it reflects the seamless completion of user tasks, directly impacting conversion rates and user satisfaction. By ensuring users can effortlessly customize and add hardware products to their bag on the Apple website, we aim to elevate the overall user experience and drive conversion.

User Task

The user task focuses on customizing and adding hardware products to the bag on the Apple website. This task involves several steps, starting with users selecting their preferred configuration options such as storage capacity, color, and additional services like AppleCare+. After reviewing their choices, users proceed to add the product to their bag for checkout. Successful completion of this task is crucial for facilitating a smooth and efficient shopping experience, ultimately leading to increased conversion rates and user satisfaction.
